Can you drive a freelancer crazy? juggling a lot of things and multitasking to the max means it’s a busy life for freelancers, it’s not all sitting in hammocks on the beach with a macbookpro. They have systems in place to maximise their time.. and by saying the wrong thing it might send everything into a tailspin.
It’s like dealing with a busy kitchen chef, they will have their way of managing things and while an innocent question like is their “fries with that” is perfectly responsible and fine – Asking “Will it be cooked right?” will probably leave you walking out with a rolling pin inserted somewhere about your person.
Its not the client’s fault, there is no Dummies Guide to Talking to Freelancers and every if not all experienced will always freelancers allow a degree of flexibility and will be nice and pleasant.
It’s the type of questions that will drive a freelancer nuts, here is are 6 things that might get under their skin so you won’t have to feel the wrath!
1. How long is it going to take?
If we have to wait for the content to be provided..forever! A freelancer will always quote their prices and time to work on your project, but is impossible for them to give you an exact time a task will take! Stop wasting time asking questions and let them do their thing.
2. Can you make it POP
An old classic – I don’t think anyone on earth knows where it came from but it’s guaranteed to irk many a freelancer no matter what service they provide. Of course they want it to popppppppp and they will use all theor popping powers to make it pop and stand out.
3. Can you take it to the next level?
Please explain to me what level you are talking about? Turn it up to 10? Gah.
4. Can you zoom out?
There is no magic software to make a graphic zoom out, it’s zoomed in so you can see the damn thing.
5. I want the website…. to like exactly like _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ (insert famous website)
One of the best ways to null any creativity is asking someone to copy someone else’s work, say that you really, really like it which is enough of a hint to take some inspiration from it.. but don’t ask for a carbon copy.
6. I’ll have to ask my boss to sign off every change.
Sigh.. and where is your boss? on holidays? playing golf? This is going to draaaaggggg out the project. Setup some sign off process when reaching milestones instead of micromanaging and singing off every.single.thing
Conclusion —
We are only ragging, the same can be applied to any industry of work but hopefully these will help prospective clients dealing with busy freelancers. If you have your own, please comment below!
